Wilhelm Friedrich Gesellschaft m. b.

Ing. Knippenburg control dampers: RIA, FINJA, LINA, ELA or RENA – which design for which duty
Controlling an air or flue gas duct does not call for a shut-off device but for a final control element that works permanently at partial opening, copes with dust, temperature changes and thermal expansion, and fits the shape of the duct. Control dampers are the usual answer – the open question is which design. Knippenburg Armaturen from Bottrop, Germany, specialises in air, flue gas and high-temperature dampers, and Ing. Wilhelm Friedrich Gesellschaft m. b. H. is the exclusive representative for Austria. This section sorts the RIA, FINJA, LINA, ELA and RENA designs by the criteria that decide the selection: duct shape, connection, temperature, tightness and actuation.
What matters when selecting a damper for air and flue gas
Conditions in air and flue gas ducts differ from those in steam or water lines. Pressures are low, cross-sections large and volume flows high. In return the medium is often hot, laden with dust and, below the dew point, corrosive. A control damper here throttles the flow rather than shutting it off tight. It spends most of its time at partial opening and has to control steadily and repeatably there. Why a damper rather than a valve is used in these lines is explained in the German article Regelklappe oder Regelventil. Within the damper range, five questions decide the design: Is the duct round or rectangular? Is the damper flanged, clamped between flanges or welded in? What is the medium temperature, and does the body need a refractory lining? What tightness is required in the closed position? Is it operated by hand or automated, and with which auxiliary energy?
The Knippenburg range at a glance
On the product page throttle and control dampers, Ing. Wilhelm Friedrich Gesellschaft m. b. H. lists the Knippenburg types RIA, FINJA, LINA, ELA, RENA and the BEA bypass damper. According to the data sheet, the range covers nominal sizes from DN 50 to DN 3000, medium temperatures up to 1000 °C, round and rectangular bodies, and body materials from grey cast iron EN-GJL-250 through P250GH, GP240GH+N, 13CrMo4-4 and G17CrMo5-5 to stainless steel. The data sheets of individual designs state partly different limits. All figures here are manufacturer data – the design for the specific case always decides.
- RIA – wafer damper, round, DN 40 to DN 2000, PN 6/10/16 or ANSI Class 150/300, operating temperature up to 1100 °C according to the manufacturer
- FINJA – double-flanged damper, round, DN 40 to DN 2000, PN 6/10/16 or ANSI Class 150/300, up to 1050 °C
- LINA – flanged damper in welded modular design, flanges to DIN 24154, DN 40 to DN 2000, up to 1050 °C
- ELA – weld-in throttle damper installed directly in the line
- RENA – rectangular damper, single or multi-blade, 50 × 50 to 2000 × 2000 mm, up to 1050 °C
RIA and FINJA: round dampers for lines with standard flanges
RIA and FINJA are the two round dampers for pipes and ducts with flanges to DIN EN 1092-1 or ANSI. The difference is the connection. The RIA is a wafer damper clamped between the two line flanges and held by through-bolts. That gives a short face-to-face length and low weight, which counts for large sizes and tight spaces. The manufacturer rates it for flue and exhaust gases up to 1100 °C. The FINJA is the double-flanged version, described by the manufacturer as the „big sister“ of the RIA. Its body has its own flanges, so it is connected more rigidly to the line and can be mounted and removed more independently of the opposite side. Knippenburg states operating temperatures up to 1050 °C. Rule of thumb: for standard lines with little space and moderate pipe forces, the RIA is the slim solution. Where the damper has to take up pipe forces, serves as an end-of-line valve or is removed regularly, the FINJA is usually the better choice. The connection types are compared in the German article Zwischenflansch, Anflansch oder Doppelflansch.
LINA: the damper to DIN 24154 for air ducts
The LINA is intended for air ducts whose flanges follow DIN 24154 rather than a piping standard – exactly the field Knippenburg names as its particular strength. The body is made in a welded modular design, which makes special lengths, special materials and adaptation to existing ducts easier. Nominal sizes are DN 40 to DN 2000, operating temperature up to 1050 °C according to the manufacturer. For hot flue gas the LINA can be supplied with a refractory lining of castable or refractory mineral wool, which keeps the full medium temperature away from body and bearings. Typical uses are combustion air and flue gas lines at furnaces and boilers, exhaust gas lines in the steel industry and ducts in flue gas cleaning.
ELA: welded in instead of flanged
The ELA is a weld-in throttle damper. It is welded directly into an existing line, so flanges and flange gaskets are not needed. According to the manufacturer, correct welding gives a tight connection without additional sealing material. Knippenburg names controlling and shutting off critical and hazardous media as well as air control as its purpose. Every flange joint less is one potential leak point less, and no space is needed for flanges and bolts. The price is accessibility: a welded-in damper can only be replaced by cutting the line. Before welding, it should therefore be clear how bearings, packing and actuator can be reached in operation. Sizes and temperature limits for the ELA are defined per project.
RENA: rectangular damper for square and rectangular ducts
Many air and flue gas ducts are rectangular, for example at heat exchangers, filters or boiler outlets. This is what the RENA is for. It is available with one or several blades, and the flanges follow DIN 24193 or given dimensions. The manufacturer lists sizes from 50 × 50 to 2000 × 2000 mm, larger on request, and operating temperatures up to 1050 °C, with an optional refractory lining. According to Knippenburg the multi-blade version offers the better control characteristic, and the blades can move synchronously or asynchronously. In large cross-sections, several narrow blades also protrude less into the duct than one large blade and usually need lower actuating forces. The single-blade version is simpler and makes sense where the cross-section is small or the damper mainly opens and closes.
Tightness: which class a control damper needs
Knippenburg supplies RIA, FINJA, LINA and RENA in sealing classes I, II or III to FCI 70-2 or better. Class I is optimised for dust-laden media, where a close-fitting seal would quickly clog. Where nothing may pass in the closed position, a sealing air version is available: an air flow between disc and body prevents flue gas from reaching the other side. The key question is whether the damper only controls or must also isolate a section of duct, for example for inspection. In the first case a low class is often enough, in the second the required tightness belongs explicitly in the specification. For pure shut-off duties at moderate temperatures, soft-seated butterfly valves are an alternative – in hot flue gas they are not, because elastomer seals reach their limits there.
Actuation and automation
All round and rectangular Knippenburg dampers are available with hand lever, worm gear, or electric, pneumatic and hydraulic actuators. The mounting flanges follow ISO 5211, and dampers that start out manually operated can be automated later with a conversion kit. Control duties usually call for an actuator with position feedback so that the control system knows the actual damper position. Compressed air is usually available in power plants and allows fast stroking times and a defined safety position; electric actuators work without a compressed air network. The criteria are summarised in the German article Absperrklappe mit Antrieb.
Four steps to the right control damper
- Duct shape: rectangular → RENA, round → RIA, FINJA, LINA or ELA.
- Connection: pipe flanges to EN 1092-1 or ANSI → RIA or FINJA, air duct flanges to DIN 24154 → LINA, welded in → ELA.
- Temperature: record medium temperature and temperature changes; for hot flue gas, material and lining are part of the decision.
- Tightness and actuation: define the class to FCI 70-2, check sealing air, choose actuator type and safety position.
With this information – plus medium, volume flow and differential pressure – the damper can be sized. Ing. Wilhelm Friedrich Gesellschaft m. b. H. has supported customers in Austria since 1983 and in South-Eastern Europe since 2019, with its own service department. The countries covered are listed under sales area.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a throttle damper and a control damper?
In air technology the terms are used almost interchangeably. Throttle damper stresses the function of narrowing the cross-section, control damper its use in a control loop with an actuator. Knippenburg calls LINA, FINJA and ELA throttle dampers; technically they are the same final control elements.
Can a control damper also shut off?
Yes, if the sealing class is designed for it. Classes I to III to FCI 70-2 allow a defined residual leakage. Where complete isolation is required in the closed position, the sealing air version is intended.
Which control damper suits rectangular ducts?
The RENA, with one or several blades. For large cross-sections and fine control, the multi-blade version is the usual choice.
Up to which temperature can the dampers be used?
The data sheets state up to 1050 °C, for the RIA up to 1100 °C; the range offered by Ing. Wilhelm Friedrich Gesellschaft m. b. H. lists medium temperatures up to 1000 °C. The permissible temperature in each case depends on material, pressure rating and lining and is fixed during sizing.
Conclusion
The choice of control damper follows the line: rectangular ducts and large cross-sections lead to the RENA, pipe flanges to the RIA or FINJA, air duct flanges to DIN 24154 to the LINA, and where no flange joint is wanted, to the ELA. Temperature, sealing class and actuation then decide the details. Clarifying these points before the enquiry gets you a damper that fits the control task. Ing. Wilhelm Friedrich Gesellschaft m. b.
